What I do and What I've Done!

I work as an Independent Literacy consultant, supporting Early Years settings, primary schools and Academies in the teaching of phonics, reading and writing.  I work with a range of schools, from small and rural to large and inner-city, supporting Senior Leadership teams, teachers, Teaching Assistants and parents.

I have had a long and varied career in education, having worked as a primary school teacher, leader and consultant.  I am absolutely passionate about developing children's learning, particularly in phonics, reading and writing and am known for my enthusiastic delivery and for inspiring excellent classroom practice.  This has enabled me to provide focused support to make a real difference in the many schools I have worked.

It was whilst working as CLLD consultant for North Yorkshire LA that I began to see the real impact that the quality teaching of phonics can have on children's reading and writing- whatever their starting point.  A programme of intensive support for primary schools and funded by the National Strategies, the CLLD programme saw me lead and support the implementation of the 'Letters and Sounds' teaching scheme in 24 primary schools, with excellent results.  It was in this role that I developed my love of working with adults  - the buzz I get out of inspiring and enthusing practitioners makes this one of the best parts of the job.

I have many years experience of working as a teacher and EYFS Lead and, through my work in schools, I still love to to get into the classroom and work with children.  Teachers comment that my demonstration teaching sessions are one of the most useful services I offer - there is nothing like sitting back to watch your own class being taught by somebody else, noticing things you might not have seen before!

In 2011 I was delighted to have my training approved for the DfE match-funding scheme.  As part of this I was observed by the DfE Lead for phonics who described me as a "clearly experienced and knowledgeable trainer" and, although the scheme has now come to an end,  I remain on a Government-approved core list of providers for quality phonics training.

I'm passionate about the teaching of reading and the crucial importance of phonics.  This, along with my personable approach and experience, motivates all those I work with, inspiring excellent classroom practice and driving school improvement.
